Martin and the Slow Road
Hello. I am Martin Dorey, the person behind Take the Slow Road. I am a writer, photographer, campervan lover, surfer, cyclist, swimmer and environmentalist.
A lifetime of camping, surfing, travelling and writing...
I have been travelling in campervans since I was in my late
teens and camping since I was a child. At first it was on rainy holidays to
Wales with my family but, once I discovered surfing, I started travelling to
find waves, sleeping on the font seat of my friend's vans or in the back of my
old 2CV with the seats taken out. I graduated to Volkswagens in the early
nineties and have owned a small fleet of them since. I now travel in a Fiat
Ducato with all mod cons because I spend a lot of time travelling and writing
and I feel I have earned a bit of comfort.
In 2011 I was commissioned by BBC2 to appear in a TV show
called 'One Man and His Campervan' after my first book, The Camper Van Cook
Book came out.
I started writing Take the Slow Road in 2016 after writing
an article for Coast Magazine about travelling slowly up the west coast of
Wales called Slow Coasters. After that the philosophy of slow travel came
naturally and Take The Slow Road: England and Wales was published in 2017.
Around the same time I was running a social media based beach cleaning campaign
called #2minutebeachclean which then became a charity The 2 Minute Foundation.
That led me to write a number of environmental books including No. More.
Plastic. and Kids Fight Plastic, which has been translated into around 20
languages. I was awarded an MBE for my environmental work in 2024.
I live in a small house bear the sea in Cornwall and am
married to Lizzy, a love found late in life. She is responsible for navigating
and purveying in-flight peck on all my trips. I have two daughters, Maggie and
Charlie, both artists and water babies.
